| ABOUT FGBW | ||||||||
| Founded in June 2006, the Fitness Group for Black Women (FGBW) is designed for black women 25 years of age and older. There is no membership fee and no gym membership* is required. With the exception of the winter months, all activities take place outdoors and all fitness levels are welcome. This FREE community group gives its members the opportunity to participate in: Weekly Workouts 5K and/or 10K health walks Meet-n-Greet sessions Community Volunteer Projects FGBW targets black women in order to promote physical activity and reduce sedentary lifestyles. By doing this, we aim to reduce risk factors which can put us at risk for health conditions such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, all of which are prevalent among African-Americans. The age-specific criteria is so chosen because as we approach our 30s or are in our 30s and beyond, our metabolism slows down. This slowed metabolism, in addition to competing priorities (careers, families, etc), increase our chances of leading sedentary lifestyles. Though the primary target of the group is black women, we include our men in the workouts on Co-ed/family Thursdays. Additionally, FGBW members are free to invite family, friends, significant others to the health walks. Future goals of FGBW include the incorporation of prostate cancer awareness events. By working out in groups, we create a network, a support system where women can work out with like-minded women. Additionally, group workouts provide mutual motivation and added safety. *Gym membership is not required but may prove beneficial during the winter months. |
