Though the morbidity (#of cases) rates for these cancers are lower among African-Americans than caucasians, the mortality (death) rates are higher than it is for our caucasian counterparts. Obesity and inactivity contribute to many of the conditions liste above; while unprotected sex, the "Down-Low" phenomenon and use of intravenous drugs are increasing the rates of HIV/AIDS in our communities. The reasons listed above led to the foundation of FGBW. As we learn more about these diseases, we as a group can make a difference by engaging in health walks which will contribute to further research, eduation and awareness of these conditions. By becoming a member of FGBW, you are taking steps to improve your health, reducing your risk of obesity and hence, reducing your risk for certain health conditions that affect African-Americans. You are choosing to become/stay fit while having fun and making a difference in our community! |
